Types of Paint Finishes
Flat: least shiny – doesn’t draw attention & doesn’t reflect light, hides imperfections, dries more easily, suits ceilings, not really washable
Semi-Gloss: a bit shiny – easy to clean, suits trim
High Gloss: stain resistant & easy to clean – suits hallways
Satin, Semi-Gloss, Eggshell: satin is less lustrous than semi-gloss, has higher sheen than eggshell, appears velvety & is more reflective & durable than eggshell
Satin: suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, & kids rooms. Satin is also a popular choice for trim, especially if you want to emphasize the architecture of a space. If you’re using a satin finish, make sure your walls are smooth and blemish-free, as the luster of it will emphasize any imperfections.
Eggshell: Because eggshell is less lustrous than satin, it is also slightly less durable. That being said, it will still hold up better than flat or matte finisheswould. Eggshell paint is a great option for walls in medium- to low-traffic areas, and can be easily cleaned. Eggshell is commonly used in living rooms and dining rooms, as it is durable and does not pick up dirt easily. If your walls have bumps or imperfections, an extra coat of eggshell can disguise them more easily than satin or high-gloss finishes.
Semi-Gloss: This glossier type of paint is somewhat stain-resistant and can be a good paint choice for any area you need to clean often, such as playrooms, family rooms, or kitchen cabinets. Semi-gloss is a more suitable paint to combat the growth of mold and mildew in bathrooms and kitchens. If dings, dents, or blemishes appear, they will be more noticeable.A glossy finish. provides a higher sheen than satin does, but it also creates a slightly sticky, plastic-like texture.
High-Gloss: High gloss paints have the highest reflective appearance. They are the toughest, most durable and most stain resistant of all finishes. High gloss paints are the easiest to clean and are typically used on doors and cabinets exposed to dirt and oil and can also be used for trim and some woodwork.
Wallpaper
Benefits: Wallpaper is durable, and can last over 15 years making it very cost effective. When wallpaper has been hung properly it can last three times longer than paint. If you have imperfect walls, high quality wallpaper can hide surface imperfections.
Disadvantages: It is more expensive than paint. Traditional wallpaper is difficult to maintain and remove. The edges may separate from the wall, especially in damp weather, and need to be reattached or pasted.Patterns need to be matched and well-aligned together.
